We went to a farm! I can't really claim this to be a "Chinese" experience, but as we were speaking Chinese, I'm going to say it counts. It was stunning, to say the least. One burger with a side of pickled green beans; two adorable, human-loving lambs; a few awkward chickens; a handful of the loveliest flowers of summer; multiple bounces on the trampoline; hundreds of freshly picked blueberries; and an endless garlic graveyard later, we all piled back into our cars and started on the windy trail back to summer school. But we wouldn't be there for long. This was our last night of obliged Chinese. With only a farewell the next day, our freedom seemed to start on that peaceful farm. Thank you so much to Silas Doyle-Burr and his uncommonly hospitable parents (who hosted 55 language students plus 12 teachers).
